Davis Scholars Program at Emma Willard

Believing that the stability of our world and America’s place in it demands large-scale, innovative, and powerful initiatives, the Davis family has designed a pilot venture that targets American boarding schools and uses the relatively new and strikingly successful DUWCSP as its model. Emma Willard School has been invited to participate in this new program along with Phillips Andover, Taft, Lawrenceville, and Westminster.
The program has two parallel componentsone designed to increase and diversify international students and the other to broaden and diversify the domestic student population at each school. The goals include 1) providing scholarship funds in support of greater diversity, 2) expecting each school to leverage this program so as to influence its educational communities, strategic planning activity, and its very school culture, and 3) transforming the American boarding school experience by building a network of individuals who will achieve future positions of significance throughout the world and who will work to “give back” by shaping a better world.
The Davis Charitable Fund will support 25 scholars per year in each program at each school beginning in the fall of 2008. Each school will be able to design its own recruitment efforts and determine the best entry point for each student. One of the added benefits of the program is that upon graduation from Emma Willard, Davis Scholars and Davis International Scholars will be eligible for continued scholarship support for four years should they elect to matriculate at any of the Davis United World College Scholars colleges and universities in the United States, now numbering more than 85 leading colleges and universitiesincluding among many others, Wellesley College, Cornell University, Smith College, Harvard College, Princeton University, Carleton College, Middlebury College, and Bryn Mawr College.
The potential impact of this program at Emma Willard is both compelling and exciting, and we have already begun discussions regarding the related admissions, aid, curricular, and cultural issues. This extraordinary opportunity comes at a moment when we are well positioned to respond and to take full advantage of this invitation. The program will require and benefit from school-wide collaboration and communication that is both strategic and tactical, and the results promise to be remarkable.
