October 2008

Dear Alumnae,

The 3s and 8s are back home after a very special Reunion 2008 weekend. They enjoyed a whirlwind (if at times wet) weekend, culminating in a moving memorial chapel service on Sunday morning. A slideshow of photos from the weekend is up on the EmmaNow news blog and class photos are available to order on the class pages.

As we head into the fall, take a look at the events calendar for gatherings in Washington, DC, Chicago, and Boston. Hope to see you out on the road!

Best,

Molly Price, Director of Alumnae Relations

Women, Power, and Possibility

On Saturday, September 27, over 700 alumnae, students, and friends convened for this year’s symposium, Women, Power, and Possibility. In a wide-ranging conversation, the seven panelists spoke of what inspired them to do the good work they are doing around the globe and the challenges and gender discrimination they have faced in their efforts.

Jessica Jackley Flannery, co-founder of Kiva.org, inspired all of us to pay attention to even the slightest glimmers of possibility and to push on in the face of adversity. Joining her on the panel were alumnae Neelam Mehta ’93, founder of Click-Aid  and Sierra Murdoch ’05, co-founder of Climate Summer (whose efforts are now devoted to www.350.org). Learn more about Jessica, Neelam, Sierra, and the other panelists.

View a video of the symposium. You'll need Quick Time to do so.

Read an article about the symposium in the Albany Times Union.

Old Friends

Shortly after the start of school, we received sad news: the trees at the far end of the athletic fields were structurally unsound and dangerously close to falling. The trees had to come down almost immediately, leaving little time to say goodbye. If you have photos of these old friends, please send them to us at alumnae@emmawillard.org to save for posterity.

You can read and respond to Trudy Hall’s full entry about these special members of the EW community on her blog. While you’re there, join the conversation about EWS class rings and see if you can tell what distinguishes an Emma Willard girl from all the rest!

EWS = Great Women

Emma Willard School is the first-ever educational sponsor of the Great Northeast Women’s Expo, Saturday, October 25, in Saratoga Springs. What better venue to communicate the power of an Emma education than one that includes leaders in finance, technology, health and wellness, home and family, careers, and many other fields?  Stop by between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to visit with Linda Passaretti ’84 and help her spread the word about Emma! Learn more about this expo here.

EWS Fall Sports

Check out the latest game summaries for the fall sports teams! So far, EW’s varsity soccer team is 8-1, and tennis is 5-1!
