Arts
he
arts are an integral part of Emma Willard's curriculum and co-curricular
life. Students are required to take arts courses prior to graduation, and
may choose from an array of dance, music, visual arts, and theatre classes.
In addition to the academic arts offerings, Emma Willard's clubs and organizations
include several singing groups, the art and literary magazine, and orchestra.
The school boasts a busy arts calendar, and hosts several arts competitions
and visiting artists throughout the year.
Disciplines
Music, theater, dance, photography, painting, weaving, ceramics, drawing,
video and digital imaging, and design. Within the Arts Division, students
learn the creative problem-solving, selection and composition, analysis and
performance vocabulary and skills unique to each of these media. Course work
is appropriate for students at every level, from those who seek a basic familiarity
with the arts to those who wish to create advanced projects in preparation
for university study. Every class at Emma Willard is taught by working artists
in their fields.
Grading Options
In many arts courses, but not all, a student may elect to take a course Credit-No
Credit, and this must be arranged with the Registrar's Office. For fall semester
and year classes, the choice of Credit-No Credit must be made by the end of
the third week of fall semester; for spring semester classes, the choice of
Credit-No Credit must be made by the end of the third week of spring semester.
Once the arrangement is made, it cannot be changed.
