Softball, Spring 2008
EWS 6Waterford 9
Emma softball began the season in an opening contest with Waterford, last year’s league champion. The terrific weather in the northeast made this game day only the second day our team had been on a full field. Undeterred, our team brought spirit and desire to the game. Facing the top pitcher in the league silenced our bats for the first four innings. Then co-captain Lindsey (3 hits on the day) took a pitch to deep left field, driving in three runs with a rocket of a home run. This lifted the entire team, and our contact at bat and play in the field picked up noticeably. Jenn and Hannah each added one hit.
The first game of the season always gives every player a clear idea of what to work on in the coming practices. There were many moments of brilliance in this first game, and we look to multiply those in our next game.
EWS 18 Loudonville 13
The Jesters traveled to Loudonville Christian for an away contest today, and the trip proved to be a fruitful one. After having established an early 8-0 lead behind senior co-captain Lindsay’s strong pitching and freshman shortstop Catherine’s two home runs, the Jesters squandered the lead and soon found themselves trailing. We gave up 11 unanswered runs and found ourselves down 11-8 in the top of the seventh and final inning. It appeared that hope was lost and that the home team had established enough momentum from their comeback to take them on to victory. Apparently while the Emma coaches were quickly going grey, the bottom half of the order went immediately to work. The Jesters plated 10 runs in the top of the seventh thanks to a few LCA errors, timely hitting, and patient at-bats. The Jesters and relief pitcher Jenn sealed the victory by only allowing two runs in the bottom half. The final score was 18-13, and it is the first victory against LCA in several years. The Jesters stand at 1-1 on the young season and play our home opener against Berlin on Friday.
EWS 6 Berlin 15
On Friday, the Jesters hosted Berlin for a CHVL contest that featured rain as its Most Valuable Player. The field was soaked at game time and it rained fairly steadily throughout. Pitching was difficult, but sophomore Jenn gave it 110 percent. The Jesters posted an early lead thanks to some erratic pitching by Berlin, but the visitors managed to adjust and were eventually able to take the lead and never look back. The final score was a disappointing 6-15. The top hitter for the Jesters was sophomore Hannah, who finished the day going 1-2, 2BB, 3B, 2RS, RBI. Our next contest is a home game against Albany Academy for Girls on Wednesday. Come on out and cheer us on to victory!

EWS 22 AAG 6
The Jesters (2-2) hosted Albany Academy (1-1) today under beautiful blue skies and temperatures in the mid 60s. The Jesters jumped to an early lead, and while the home team allowed the visitors to momentarily climb back into the game, the persistent Jesters kept pounding out hits and runs for a final score of 22-6. The patience and aggressiveness that was missing at the plate last Friday against Berlin was present for most of today’s contest. Senior co-captain Lindsay, (14Ks, 8BB) gave the visitors trouble all afternoon. She was also able to contribute at the plate (3-3, 1B, 2B, HR, 3BB, 3 steals, 6 RBI, 5 RS) as was senior designated hitter Abby (2-2, 2 singles, 2 RBI, 2 RS, 3BB). The game was blown open by a late inning grand slam by freshman shortstop Catherine (1-5, 4 RBI, 3 RS, BB), who continues to impress with her strong play in the field and at the plate. Our next game is an away contest on Tuesday at New Lebanon. Please come out and support us if you can!
EWS 6 New Lebanon 9
The Jesters had an away contest in New Lebanon, and unfortunately the final score wasn’t as beautiful as the day was! Emma Willard found themselves down early and were forced to play catch-up all game. The final score was 9-6, and even though it goes down in the loss column, there were some bright spots in our play. Overall the defense played pretty well committing few errors, but we still need to work on some things. On the offensive side, senior co-captain Lindsay led the way with her torrid hitting, going 4-4 on the day with 2 runs scored, and RBI, and a stolen base. Junior centerfielder Lauren also contributed offensively with a 2-4 day, 2 RBIs, and a stolen base. Our next contest is an away game at Germantown on Thursday. The weather should be fantastic, so come on out and cheer on the Jesters!
EWS 5 Germantown 19
The Jesters made the long road trip down to Germantown for the first of two meetings between the teams. It has been years since the Jesters have been able to leave with a victory, and unfortunately this year was no different as the visitors fell 19-5. The game was close until the very end when the home team exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior co-captain Lindsay (2-2, 2 doubles,2 steals, walk, run scored, RBI) and sophomore right fielder Ngozi (1-2, double, RBI) led the way for Emma Willard’s offense. Also contributing with RBIs were Catherine, Lauren, and Edith. The Jesters play a home contest on Tuesday, April 29, and even though the forecast is not for temperatures in the 70s with blue skies, we would love to have you out to support the team against last year’s league champions.
EWS 2 Waterford 20
Yesterday, the Jesters had a home contest against last year’s league champions, Waterford, and unfortunately the home team fell 20-2. Two Waterford pitchers (including two-time league MVP) combined to one hit the Jesters on a chilly April afternoon. Sophomore Jenn managed the lone hit and also did a nice job pitching despite the final score. The visitors ripped the ball deep and long for the first five innings and never looked back. Loudonville Christian comes to play on Friday, and we would all love your support.
EWS 0 Loudonville 7
The rain held off for the Jesters today as they hosted Loudonville Christian. After having stunned Loudonville earlier in the season with 10 runs in the top of the seventh, Emma Willard just couldn’t push any runs across today. The home team fell 7-0, yet despite the loss, it was absolutely the finest defensive game we played this year. We committed only one error and managed to hold the strong hitting visitors to only seven hits. Our problem today was that we just couldn’t make solid contact and get on base. We had six hits and two walks, but all the balls we hit were weak ground balls to the infield. The top performers were sophomore pitcher Jenn (7 IP, 5Ks) and sophomore catcher Hannah (2-3, 2 singles, 1 steal).
EWS 11 Heatly 6
The Jesters had a rare Saturday game today, and while everyone was a bit exhausted after having taken the SATs in the morning, the team came out and was ready and eager to play. We traveled to Heatly and beat the home team 11-6 behind some exceptional pitching from sophomore Jenn and amazing defensive behind her. Offensively, the team was led by freshman shortstop Catherine (3-5, 3 singles, RS, RBI); senior third-baseman Lindsay (1-3, HR, 3 RS, 2RBI, 2 BB, SB); and sophomore catcher Hannah (2-5, 2B, 1B, 2RBI). While not registering a hit, junior centerfielder Lauren walked in all three plate appearances and is posting an impressive on-base percentage this year. The Jesters travel to Doane Stuart on Monday for a 4:00 start; come out and join us if you can!

EWS 15 Doane Stuart 0
The sun and warm temperatures came back to Mt. Ida for today’s home contest against Doane Stuart, and the home team didn’t let the “Jester Faithful” down. The Jesters posted an impressive 15-0 victory behind the economical pitching of sophomore Jenn. Her line is an impressive one: 5IP, O hits, 6Ks. She also got the job done at the plate as well (2-4, double, 2 RS, 2RBI, BB). Freshman right fielder Lauren (2-3, double, RS, 2 RBI); sophomore catcher Hannah (4-4, double, HR, 2 RS, 4RBI); senior left fielder Claire (2-2, 2RS, RBI); senior co-captains Lindsay (3-4, 2 doubles, HR, RS, 4 RBI, steal) and Jenny (2-2, 4RS, RBI, 2BB) all contributed heavily to Emma’s offensive outburst in the second inning. One of the highlights of the game was the back-to-back home runs by Hannah and Lindsay in the second inning that essentially crippled the opponent. This was, indeed, a game of firsts for the Jesters; never in my memory have we had a no-hitter and back-to-back home runs!

EWS 3 New Lebanon 5
The Jesters hosted New Lebanon today under beautiful blue skies, warm temperatures, and halcyon breezes. Just as this description is probably lulling you into a gentle slumber, the day lulled the Jester bats to the tune of a 5-3 loss. Defensively it was a fine game, but the home team just couldn’t find a rhythm. A late rally sparked by a two-out, two run single by freshman designated hitter Lauren wasn’t enough to put one in the win column. Collectively we struck out a mind-boggling nine times. We never looked comfortable and consistently swung at poor pitches once we fell behind in counts. Tomorrow is the hard hitting team from Germantown, so we will need to bring our A game to the field.
EWS 0 Germantown 14
The Jesters hosted Germantown today for a CHVL contest that featured two teams that have had some amazing games over the years. Unfortunately, the visitors beat the hosts 14-0 behind some solid pitching, flawless defense, and timely hitting. Germantown was completely stymied by the Jesters’ solid defense in several innings, but in the fifth and seventh innings, the proverbial floodgates opened as the Jesters surrendered five and six runs, respectively. We just couldn’t get anything going on offense, and a few poor at-bats soon multiplied. The offensive star for the Jesters was freshman designated hitter Lauren, who went 2-3 on the afternoon with a stolen base. Back to practice tomorrow and Friday to work on hitting, hitting, and more hitting. Hope to see you Monday at Albany Academy.
EWS 16 AAG 8
Today the Jesters travelled to Academy for what was the last time these two teams will play one another as Albany Academy will move out of the CHVL league and into the Colonial Conference. We wanted to go out with a bang, and fortunately we did, crushing the home team 16-8. Our defense was quite solid again, thanks to some fine catching by sophomore Hannah and junior left fielder Lauren. Lauren’s great catch saved what very well might have been a grand slam. At the plate, senior co-captain Lindsay (3-4, HR, 2 triples, 8 RBI, 2 RS, BB, SB) continued her torrid hitting with 8 RBIs. Sophomore Hannah (2-4, 3RS, RBI, BB) and freshman second baseman Lauren (2-5, 4 RS, 2RBI) helped considerably on offense. Sophomore pitcher Jenn deserves credit too; the temperatures were in the low 50s and the wind was gusting the whole game, so pitching seven innings was quite a chore. Our last home contest is Wednesday against Heatly at 4:00. The weather forecast is not too promising, but we would love to see some fans.
EWS 11 Healty 7
The rain managed to leave the area about an hour before game time, so the field was in perfect shape for the Jesters’ last home contest of the year. The visitors from Green Island (Heatly) made a game of it in the late innings, but solid defense and timely hitting allowed the home team to post an 11-7 victory. Led by the sophomore battery, Jenn and Hannah, the Jesters were able to establish an early lead and hold on for the victory. Offensively, freshman designated hitter Lauren (3-4, 2B, RS, 3RBI) continued her hot hitting, and freshman shortstop Catherine (3-4, SB, 3RS) found her “groove” again. Senior centerfielder Claire (1-3, 3RS, SB) and senior second-baseman Jenny (1-1, 4BB, 2RS, RBI) also deserve recognition for nice games on the bases and in the field. Tomorrow is our last game of the year, and we travel to Berlin to hopefully make it three wins in a row. Come out and cheer us on if you are able!
EWS 16 Berlin 8
The Jesters faced the Mountaineers in the last game of the year. The rain that fell consistently all day let up moments before the first pitch and stayed away until the top of the seventh inning. Fortunately, we were batting in the top half, so the heavy rain that fell made things incredibly more difficult for Berlin as they ended up losing the game 16-8. The Jesters got on the board quickly with three in the first inning and then five more in the third inning. The home team began to make things interesting, but the Jesters posted four runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory. Another outstanding battery performance by sophomores Jenn and Hannah, coupled with offensive input from junior center fielder Edith (1-2, 2RS, RBI, HBP, BB) and junior right fielder Brielle (1-1, RS, RBI, 2HBP) propelled the Jesters to their third victory in the week. The season ended today at 7-8. We sadly say goodbye to our departing seniorsLindsay, Abby, Jenny, Alexis, and Claire. They will be missed.
