Teaching Internships (paid) for 20082009
Position descriptionThe teaching internship at Emma Willard School is a one-year position that includes teaching, coaching and dormitory duties. Searching for recent college graduates, the school typically hires four or five interns in the subject areas of English, foreign language, history, mathematics, and/or science.
Each intern teaches two sections under the guidance of the department chair, usually working closely with teachers who have responsibility for other sections of the same course. The interns participate in a weekly seminar on education and teachingits history, philosophy, and practiceand the school sends the interns to the New York State Association of Independent Schools’ Beginning Teachers Institute, a two-day workshop offered in October.
In athletics, each intern coaches or teaches in the after-school physical education program for one or two seasons per year, and in the dormitory, each intern works closely with a houseparent, sharing responsibility for the houseparent’s halls. The intern is on duty every other weekend and two evenings per week. Because the intern has significant responsibilities on a dormitory corridor of adolescent girls, only women applicants can be considered.
Compensation
The stipend for the intern position is $17,000. In addition, interns receive room and board. Other benefits include medical insurance, tuition to the NYSAIS Beginning Teachers Institute, and assistance from the school in job placement for the following year.
Application process
The preliminary application consists of a cover letter and resume. The school will review applications and schedule phone interviews with candidates who appear to provide the best match. The top candidates are then invited to campus for a full day that involves observing classes and interviewing with members of the department and the administration.
