Carol Bendall earned a B.A. in philosophy and psychology and an M.A. in liberal studies. She comes to EW from Kimball Union Academy where she was history department chair and served as faculty advisor to the Model United Nations club. Committee work included serving on the Writing Across the Curriculum Committee and the Faculty Professional Issues Committee.

Mark Buckholtz joined Emma Willard in 2000 as a history instructor. He holds a B.A. and an M.A. from Fairleigh Dickinson University and an M.A., an M.Phil., and a Ph.D. from Yale, where he was assistant professor of German studies. At Emma Willard, Dr. Buckholtz has coached junior varsity basketball, is a dorm affiliate, and is involved in Speech and Debate. His diverse extracurricular interests include fly-fishing, golf, collecting rare books and antiques, architectural preservation, gardening, and local history.

Ruth Burday came to Emma Willard in 2000 as a history instructor. She received a B.A. from Williams College and an M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ms. Burday coaches varsity volleyball, and can often be seen with her black Lab, Homer.

Cary Dresher graduated from the American University with a B.A. in political science and received an M.S. in education from the University of Southern Maine. He was previously the history department chair at The Knox School and taught AP American History, American studies, and European history at Triton Regional High School in Byfield, Massachusetts. In addition to chairing the history department at The Knox School, Cary was a dorm parent, member of the curriculum and citizenship committees, co-advisor for student council, model U.N., and the ninth grade class, and was an assistant coach for the varsity basketball team.

Susan A. Hoffer is trained in all aspects of foundation curriculum and holds both AP and IB portfolio curriculum certification. At Emma Willard she teaches AP Art History and AP Drawing Portfolio. She initiated the High School Juried Regional Art Exhibition, a venue intended to showcase the artistic efforts of art students in area high schools and has, for many years worked as an AP reader/writer for the College Board. Susan has received artist residency awards for her glazed, oil installation panels, the most recent of which was at the Tyrone Guthrie Center in Ireland. An Adirondack 46er, she especially enjoys winter hiking.

Allyson Montana graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in art history and Mandarin Chinese from Skidmore College and received an M.A. from Columbia University Teachers College. After teaching social studies and Chinese at Westbrook High School in Maine, Allyson became the district director of gifted and talented education. She has taught introductory level Chinese at the University of Southern Maine and was the summer academic director for Glimpses of China in Shanghai. Allyson has traveled to Asia with the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund, AP Chinese seminar in Taiwan, and the Korea Society teacher education program in Seoul.

Robert J. Naeher began teaching at Emma Willard in 1997 and is currently chair of the history and social sciences department. He earned a B.A. from The King's College, an M.A. from Trinity College, and a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. In the spring of 2005 he spent two weeks in Russia, where he visited several schools and taught on World War II and the Cold War. In the summer of 2006 he served as the Master Teacher for Crossroads of Empire: Cultural Exchange and Imperial Rivalry at Old Fort Niagara, a National Endowment Landmarks in American history and culture summer workshop for secondary school teachers. On sabbatical during the spring of 2007, he was a Jonathan Edwards Research Fellow at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University and a Kate B. and Hall J. Peterson Research Fellow at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Mass. Coach of the cross-country team, Dr. Naeher has led students on Habitat for Humanity trips and is co-faculty adviser to the FOCUS (Fellowship of Christians in Universities and Schools) group on campus. Dr. Naeher has served as a grader for the Advanced Placement U.S. History exam, has prepared curricular materials for the College Board, and has made numerous presentations at professional conferences. His extra-historical interests include reading, biking, kayaking, playing the dulcimer and the drums (not at the same time), and listening to folk music and classic rock (occasionally, though rarely, at the same time).

Elizabeth Oxler graduated from Tufts University with a B.A. in political science and community health. She has worked as a staff assistant at LKK Partners, an assistant director at Grassroots Campaigns Inc. in the Seattle DNC office, a legislative intern in Representative Kathi Anne Reinstein’s office (Massachusetts State House), and intern in the Infectious Disease Department at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Hospital. Lizzy also held positions as head and assistant coach at the Tufts field hockey camps, and she has also coached field hockey at Premier Sports Camps.

Emily M. Snyder graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with a B.A. in late antique cultures and religious studies and received an M.A. in religion and the arts from Yale University Divinity School. Before coming to Emma Willard, she taught high-school theology and was the assistant director of college counseling at Marianapolis Preparatory School. In the summer of 2006, Ms. Snyder spent a month studying the religions and cultures of the Himalayas at a National Endowment for the Humanities teacher institute, and spent a week last summer at Oxford University studying the impact of T.E. Lawrence on the formation of the modern Middle East. Ms. Snyder coaches JV field hockey, is an affiliate on the freshman hall, and teaches a PE class on Muay Thai, the national martial art of Thailand, which is one of her passions.
