The Annual Fund

How does a small girls' school change the world?
One girl at a time.
mma Willard students are global citizens, learning and developing their talents for the greater good, as well as for themselves. Whatever their passions, they define success in terms of making a positive difference in the lives of others. Your gift to the Annual Fund supports a cascade of possibilities for today’s Emma girls, but it doesn’t stop there. By helping our students achieve their dreams, you are sharing the power of an Emma Willard education with everyone whose lives their success will touch.
Anoushka
I’m Anoushka, and I’m a junior at Emma. I was born in Australia but moved to the United States at a young age. When not at Emma Willard, I live with my mother and sister in Seattle, WA. I come from long line of family members who attended boarding school, though no one before me had attended Emma Willard. As a courtesy to my mom, who attended Ethel Walker, and many family members, who attended Williston Northampton, I visited these schools, but I knew I really wanted to attend Emma. Despite the fact that I visited Emma Willard while suffering from a 104 degree fever, it was definitely my first choice.
My first year had some rough spots. I really missed my mom, but I have adjusted to being away from home, and I love being at Emma.
Math is my favorite subject. I enjoy math because it makes sense; I can learn how to solve a problem and then apply the rules to similar problems and generally arrive at the one, correct answer. I also enjoy my biology research class because it involves a lot of fun experiments.
Perhaps my favorite thing about Emma is the community. These days, I hear the word empowered a lot. Because of Emma, I know what it means. I have developed confidence and courage to talk about my beliefs and define my values and what is important to me. Last summer, I attended a conference about how to use my values to better serve the world, and I also traveled to Cambodia with a program designed to foster communication between the United States and Asian countries. It was amazing to see a new part of the world and learn as much as I could about the people and culture in Cambodia.
When I am not studying, I am a Leader in Community Service (LINCS) at Emma Willard and I oversee five of our community service groups. I am also part of the Inner Journey, through which I can explore my values and thoughts about spirituality. I play the double bass in the school orchestra, and Ms. McClusky, our orchestra director, is my advisor, so I have a lot of motivation to play well!
My dream is to be someone who makes a differencea trailblazer. I’d like to be in communication with people all over the world, and I definitely want a career in which I can travel extensively. I’d also like to be a role model, because my mother has been such a wonderful role model for me.
Danielle
I’m Danielle, and I am a sophomore at Emma. My family lives in Sharon, MA, and I have an older brother and sister. I learned about Emma from two friends of mine who came here, and from Julie Bradley from the admissions office when she visited my school.
Adjusting to life at Emma wasn’t too hard because I’ve gone to summer camp for a long time, and I am used to being away from my family. Also, I attended pre-season my first year (and this year). That really helped me make friends and get used to the campus and buildings before the pressure of the school year hit.
I love it at Emma. I like boarding because I really get to know my friends and my teachers who serve as dorm affiliates. It is great to have teachers around for extra help and to spend time with them outside of the classroom setting. (Like everyone here; I also love Revels!)
This year I am taking English, history, Spanish, French, geometry, and chemistry. My favorites are English, history, and Spanish. What I like best about Emma is the warm atmosphere and the community. It’s so diverse here and I’ve met girls from all over the world whom I never would have met if I weren’t here.
During my summers, I attend summer camp and dance camp. This year I am taking intermediate contemporary dance, which I really enjoy.
Because I like to write so much, I chose The Clock, our school newspaper, as my service project. Meeting deadlines is sometimes stressful, but I like reporting, and I hope maybe in a few years I might be the editor-in-chief.
I’ve known since elementary school that I’d like to be an elementary school teacher. I love working with kids, and I also really like helping other people. I’ve always enjoyed helping my friends with homework or understanding new concepts. I think it would be very fulfilling to teach.
