Full scholarships available for boarding school and undergraduate education!

Emma Willard School is the oldest and most venerable girls’ school in the United States. Located in Troy, New York, the school educates 310 girls in grades 9-12. Emma Willard proudly fosters in each young woman a love of learning, the habits of an intellectual life, and the character, moral strength, and qualities of leadership to serve and shape her world.

Believing that education is the pathway to true global understanding, the Shelby Cullom Davis family has selected Emma Willard School to participate in two groundbreaking pilot programs that further the school’s efforts to provide an empowering education to talented and motivated girls from across the globe. The goal of both programs—one for international students and one for domestic students—is to attract highly motivated, potential future leaders who will benefit from the educational opportunities of select American boarding schools. The domestic program also seeks to serve those students who would be among the first in their family to attend college.

The grants are need-based, and each successful candidate will have her full need met by grants from the Davis family and from Emma Willard School. Students may enroll in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades as well as during the postgraduate year. Upon graduation from Emma Willard, Davis Scholars are eligible for continued scholarship support at any of the 89 Davis United World Scholars colleges and universities which now support more than 1,400 students from 126 countries.

The first class of Davis Scholars will enter Emma Willard School in September 2008. They hail from Bolivia, Botswana, Croatia, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam as well as the United States. Emma Willard School has a long tradition of educating a diverse group of women of merit, and the school shares the Davis family’s commitment to building cross-cultural understanding. As the leading educator of young women, Emma Willard is proud to leverage the value of this remarkable initiative to achieve a demonstrable and sustained impact on the world.

In supporting highly motivated and talented students from around the world, the Davis family looks to create a cadre of future leaders, Americans and non-Americans alike, whose shared perspectives and global experiences will prepare them to collaborate effectively in a demanding, increasingly interdependent world. Head of School Trudy Hall states, “As our world becomes smaller and yet increasingly complex, initiatives like the Davis Scholars Program will make a notable difference in levels of awareness, tolerance, and sensitivity among young people worldwide. What better way to prepare the leaders of tomorrow for the challenges they will face?”

Successful candidates for the Davis Scholars Program will be excellent students in their current academic setting, demonstrate leadership and service potential, and possess a strong command of English. The application deadline is February 1, 2009. Admissions information can be found at www.emmawillard.org/admissions. To schedule a visit to campus, please call Ms. Busone at (518) 833-1320 or email sbusone@emmawillard.org.

"I have given to the school over the years not only because I am grateful for my own education, but also because I believe much of the world's future will depend on the efforts of intelligent and capable women. For a young woman to achieve identity, independence, and intellectual courage, she must have excellent teaching at an early age. I am very proud that Emma Willard provides such a superb education."
