9:10 a.m. Poetry Workshop

Poetry Workshop class has been a journey this year. As an upperclasswomen elective, it is a semester-long course, thus putting some limit on time. However, since it is an elective that focuses particularly on poetry, it is a nice segue to the world of poetry. After discussing numerous topics such as tone, speaker, and musical elements over the last few weeks, today we created a poem that was inspired by music and shared it with the class.

10:30 a.m. Free Period

I spend many of my free periods reading books in my room. Currently, I am really into The Lonely Polygamist by Brady Udall, which talks about the challenges and stress that middle-aged men face during that particular time in their lives. Reading books in my cozy bed is not only fun but also gives me a break from the academic classes.

11:25 a.m. Lunch and School Council

I brought my lunch to my School Council meeting. School Council is a group of eight girls representing either their class, the student body, Peer Educators or Proctors. Each class representative helps to bring the particular interests of their class, while Peer Educators and Proctors think as residential leaders of the dormitories. We get to talk about the issues and concerns around the school and actively engage ourselves in faculty meetings to have our voices heard in making all-school decisions. Today, we were busy getting ready for the administration forum that is planned for tomorrow to initiate more flowing communication with the school’s administration. At Emma, there is always a way to suggest your ideas.

12:15 p.m. Economics

In Economics class we were busy learning about hedge funds to prepare for our Economics field trip the next day. In history classes at Emma there are often field trips, and classes go to places like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Jewish Heritage, Old Sturbridge Village, and many more. The visits really give you a hands-on experience of the historical period you are studying and broaden your knowledge. The research and learning of basic concepts of hedge funds before visiting Paloma Partners will definitely enrich our experience there.

1:10 p.m. AP BC Calculus

Currently, since it is very close to May, our class is focused on preparing for the AP exam. We have timed mock AP exams in class to get a sense of the time we take solving each problem. Mr. Berry teaches us about some ways to cut back time when solving multiple choice questions, when the time restriction seems to be most apparent.

2:30 p.m. Neuroscience

Today in Neuroscience we had a discussion about Bipolar disorder. After reading about different mental illnesses from an autobiographical or biographical view, we wrote a paper describing the basic facts about it such as symptoms, treatment, prognosis, and role of the brain in the particular disorder. After becoming experts about the particular disorder, we got to present the disorder to the entire class as if we were teachers. At Emma, I not only learned how to read and write, but also had numerous opportunities to teach my classmates with the new knowledge I learned from the class.

3:35 p.m. Afterschool PE

Zumba is just a whole lot of fun! I was never a fan of working out before, but Zumba feels like a dance party! Not only do I get to spend some joyous times with friends outside of class, but I also burn some calories as a bonus!

5:35 p.m. Choir

Being in a chorus program is much more than singing; it is about learning music, participating as a member of a team, making progress together, and learning from each other. These things can’t be possible without a great instructor and eager chorus members. In the midst of daily stress and fatigue, choir allows me the joy of simply singing. This joy is felt by all of us in our choral program and helps us as a team to achieve amazing perfection in our concerts. My loving chorus director, Dr. Spiro-Allen, constantly prods and supports me so that I can push myself to my own musical limit. If you seek an opportunity you will achieve it. In choir, I sang but also was able to conduct the choir during rehearsals and to accompany the chorus.

6:30 p.m. Dinner

I hung out with Karen and a group of friends during dinner after we all came out from choir rehearsal. I was happy to see General Tso’s Chicken, and we devoured our food, since we were starving from the long rehearsal, and mostly joked around. I get extremely psyched whenever we are served Chinese food! The General Tso’s Chicken was so good and our dinner table went on talking about our favorite meals at Emma. I can proudly say that the food here at Emma is better than some colleges!

7:30 p.m. Study Hall

I love check-ins during study hall. It is my primary role as a Proctor (residential leader) but I love it because I get to share intimacies with the girls, one-on-one. Today, talking with Sophie, we went on and on about great novels. She suggested some great detective stories last week and since then I am borrowing a book each week to read from her. It is a great time for me to see how people on my dorm hall are doing, while building personal connections with them. After check-ins are finished, I return to my room to start homework, where it is easy to get work done, since 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. is a quiet time when all of the students are working on their assignments.
