December 10, 2007Peanuts and Shells, oh my!Peanuts and Shells is one of the many fun activities happening during Revels week. The event starts on Monday when the Shell (the gift giver) gives an inexpensive gift to their peanut (the gift receiver). Girls line up their bags (or stockings) in their alcove with wish lists of items they would like most. The Shell keeps her identity secret until the last day, Friday, when the last gift is given face to face. It is an excellent kick-off to Revels. December 10, 2007The Academics of MotherhoodAccording to college counselor Alizabeth Smith, who delivered Monday’s inspirational address, curricular subjects like physics, geometry, chemistry, performing arts, biology, history, physical education, and literature will not only serve students well as they pursue their academic careers in higher education, they will also provide some vital tools should any of them find themselves becoming the mothers of one or more children. Craft items included bracelets, earrings, pine cone angels, creative magnets, and flowers. December 5, 2007After all, it is Rocket ScienceOn Wednesday, the Rocket Science class traveled to Florida to watch the launch of the space shuttle Atlantis, which was scheduled for the next day. Unfortunately, the mission was postponed due to difficulties with the fuel tanks. The team (12 students) and project managers (two teachers) still made the most of their field trip to Cape Canaveral. This was the time for the team to show the project managers what they knew. Split into small groups, team members set off on a mission to take artistic pictures of things such as gimbals, SRBs, and control valves. During the mission they got to see the spacecrafts and astronauts that they had researched and were amazed at how much they already knew! Among the problems they faced in this mission, the students had to be accurate in their photos as well as artistic and unique. At the end of the day, students submitted their pictures for a competition. Although the class didn’t get to witness the launch, the two-day-trip to Florida was a great learning and bonding experience. Submitted by Emma Now community service news team/Asma '09 |

December 5, 2007Hanukkah begins!Students of the Jewish faith and other religions gathered in Kellas Lower Dining Room for a Hanukkah party. They enjoyed Jewish dishes while playing dradel and winning gelt (chocolate coins). The Emma community did their best to recreate the fun, games, and food for the students who cannot go home for this most treasured of celebrations. After dinner, students lit candles in the menorah and sang songs. They then treated the audience to a skit telling what Hanukkah is really about. December 2, 2007The 25th Annual Troy Victorian StrollDowntown Troy was host again to the beloved Troy Victorian Stroll. The afternoon event was full of families, packed coffee shops, some snow flurries, busy shoppers, and strolling couples, as well as an ice sculpture replicating Santa’s sleigh and reindeer. Roaming the streets blocked off for the day's activities were volunteers dressed in Victorian costumes; others handed out balloons or candy canes. The day was filled with performances by Morris dancers and a gospel choir, and exhibits by local artists. Despite the chilly weather, the 25th annual Troy Victorian Stroll was a success and another way to kick off the holiday season. Submitted by Emma Now community service news team/Julia '09 |
