A Special Evening with Joshua Bell

On Saturday evening, students went to the Palace Theater in Albany, where they heard Grammy-winning violinist Joshua Bell perform with the Albany Symphony Orchestra. The leading violin virtuoso made his professional debut at age 14. Now 40, he played two of his famous pieces, one of which was from West Side Story Suite. In addition, the girls listened to the latest composition by Music Alive resident composer Peter Child. These pieces were all amazingly put together by the Albany Symphony Orchestra and extraordinarily directed by music director/conductor David Alan Miller.

Prospective Students Visit Our Campus

Prospective Emma students came to the Admissions open house program to see our magnificent campus. They visited classes taught by the very same teachers we are accustomed to seeing on a daily basis. Many visiting students, not surprisingly overwhelmed by all that is Emma, asked today’s students for directions and advice, and we sure were glad to assist. Let’s hope the very same girls we offered directions to Slocum and Weaver will be sitting in our classrooms next year!

In Memory of Martin Luther King

The Black and Hispanic Awareness club (BHA) held a program for Martin Luther King Day that included a poetry reading, a short video of King’s famous speeches, group discussion, and a speech given by The Reverend Robert E. Linder from Troy. The audience was split into groups to discuss King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Each group came up with a word from the speech that they thought was important. In the end, Rev. Linder talked about how racism still exists and is hidden in society. He believes that people should be aware of this. In order to make America a greater nation, we should, as King said, “Let freedom ring.”

Emma Girls Hit the Lanes!

Emma Willard students and athletic director Julie Walsh kicked off the weekend at Spare Time bowling in East Greenbush. While some students fared better than others, all had a good time as they enjoyed time off campus with their friends, concession stand junk food, and good music. The highlight of the evening was the competition between Cammie ’09 and Alisha ’09, who bowled while using crutches!

Talking With Your Body

The Emma Willard dance program was grateful to have guest artist Suzanne Oliver join the dance community January 7–13. Ms. Oliver, an assistant professor of dance at SUNY–Brockport and an accomplished choreographer, worked with advanced classes on technique and style. She also worked extensively with the Emma Willard Dance Company on a piece entitled “Peeling Away.” In dance, Oliver feels that talking with you body, or communication, becomes an important aspect of dance and “Peeling Away” gives the Dance Co. girls a chance to communicate to the audience through a different approach. Her week's stay at Emma was full of nonstop dance and her teachings were enjoyed throughout the dance community.

When Allyson meets Oysters

Allyson Montana, director of curriculum and a history instructor at EW, shared her views of the oyster as a great artist in nature by showing life deep in the ocean. With the interlacing of oceans and oysters, Ms. Montana has brought the visitor into the limitless boundary of imagination under the sea.
