March 31, 2008Accepted Students DayAccepted students and their families returned tocampus for Accepted Students Open House. Despite the uncooperative weather, it was a wonderful day. Our accepted students and parents got to know one another and through class visits, an extraordinary arts performance, parent and student “meet and greet” parties, really got to know us. March 29, 2008Earth HourAt 8 p.m. students and faculty at Emma Willard participated in Earth Hour to help raise awareness of environmental issues. Many of the campus lights were turned off to acknowledge the power that would typically be used, except for the ones that were needed for security and emergency reasons. Participants signed a glow-in-the-dark petition requesting that more than 50% of the energy Emma Willard uses to come from renewable resources by April 2009. There was also a scavenger hunt. March 29, 2008Hike to Snowy PeaksOn Saturday, the Outing Club went on a snow shoe hike on Cascade Mountain near Lake Placid. All the students bundled up and set out for some fun, bright and early. A five-mile hike was filled with great fun, amazing sights, scenery, and relaxation from the hectic process of re-assimulating to school after spring break. March 28, 2008An Insider's View of WashingtonCongresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand, a 1984 graduate of EWS, visited campus Friday evening to speak to a group of students from the AP Government & Politics class and area alumnae and parents. Gillibrand spoke about the importance of her Emma Willard education to her work as a congresswoman representing New York’s 20th Congressional District.

March 27, 2008Music Tells the StoryAs part of the Serving & Shaping Her World Speakers Series, Major Jackson, the author of two collections of poetry: Hoops (Norton: 2006) and Leaving Saturn (University of Georgia: 2002), was on campus March 27. She helped students understand how the nuns are recruited and ordained, and how their lives differ from Buddhist monks. March 4, 2008Lunch with the Peace CorpsFollowing their presentation at Morning Reports, houseparent Sabrina Putnam, seminar instructor Pam Skripak '80, and major gifts officer Suzanne Longley '94 shared with students their remarkable experiences in the Peace Corps at a special lunch. The ladies sat down with students to answer questions and talk more about their adventures, achievements, and aspirations. In keeping with the theme, the dining hall served foods from the areas where the three women servedWest Africa, Ecuador, and the West Indies. March 3, 2008Becoming an AthleteA self-proclaimed couch potato, Sarah’s idea of exercise was picking grass until she decided to train for the 50-mile Tour de Habitat to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. Training for the bike ride turned out to be more difficult than she expected and the race itself was full of obstacles, but she learned about perseverance and now participates in team sports for all the health benefits she gains. March 1, 2008Odd Couple, Great Play!Emma actresses dazzled the audience with their superb acting skills and wit in the female version of The Odd Couple. Eva ’09 played Florence, a neat freak who moves into the home of her sloppy friend, Olive, played by Maura ’09 (left). Soon the two begin to get on each other’s nerves, especially when the Costazuela brothers, played by Lauren '09 and MaryLeigh ’09 (right), come for dinner.
