Emma Willard to Host Classical Indian Dancer

n Tuesday, September 18, Emma Willard School will welcome classical Indian dance teacher Aloka Kanungo, who will offer a class for students and faculty.

Kanungo is a rare combination of dancer, choreographer, scholar, and teacher. Trained by the legendary maestro Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, she has been highly acclaimed by the press and public in India and abroad. As a soloist she has performed at most of the major dance festivals in India, as well as the inaugural Festival of India in Tokyo; the millennium year Bath International Music and Dance Festival at the Bath Babylon Festival in Iraq; the 50th year of  India’s Republic Day celebration in Myanmar; and the Odissi Dance Festival in Washington, D.C. The class will be held from 3:35 to 5:00 p.m. in the Strong Dance Studio, located on the top floor of Slocum Hall on the Emma Willard campus.

When Emma Hart Willard first established her school in Troy, 90 girls from around the country were enrolled in math, science, history, foreign language, and literature courses. Willard herself not only served as instructor, she wrote a number of textbooks used at her school and throughout America.
