Komen Race Holds Special Meaning for EW Student
October 3, 2007
group of more than 25 Emma Willard School students, alumnae, faculty, administrators, and parents will gather at the Empire State Plaza on Saturday, October 6, for the 13th Annual Susan G. Komen Race/Walk for the Cure. Since its inception, the event has raised approximately $1.3 million to fund local screening, education, and treatment programs for breast cancer. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds from the 5K (3.1-mile) race will help fund national breast cancer research.
Emma Willard’s participation in the Komen race is being coordinated by one of the school’s community-service groups, titled Race for the Cause, which sponsors and supports races, games, and other activities to raise funds for local and national charities. This year’s race holds a special meaning for one of the team leaders of Race for the Cause. Danielle Volman, vice president of the senior class at Emma Willard, was just six when her 28-year-old mother died of leukemia brought on by radiation treatments for breast cancer. Although school testing will prevent her from running in this year’s race, the track star and triathlete has been working busily to sell pink ribbons in support of the Komen Foundation.
“Running has always been an important part of my life,” Volman said. “And supporting the Susan G. Komen Race is a way for me to do something I enjoy and help fight a disease that impacted my family.”
