Party Night to Benefit Local Animal Shelter

April 23, 2008

n April 25 Emma Willard School’s Student Organization for Animal Respect (SOAR) will hold a movie night showing Homeward Bound and serving snack foods as part of a fundraising event for the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society. Snacks will be served during the movie, including chips, chicken fingers, and mozzarella sticks, which are a departure from the usually healthy menu items offered in the school dining hall. Additionally, there will be a silent auction and raffles for prizes such as gift cards to Espirit Salon, Clinical Dimensions, Sushi King, and others, as well as stays at area hotels and four tickets to a Yankees game. Everyone will have the opportunity to spend time with cats brought in from the shelter. The event runs from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Emma Willard’s 2e-café and the student center. Proceeds raised from this event will be donated directly to the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society.

Located in Menands, the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society is a nonprofit organization that provides shelter for homeless and abandoned animals from Albany and Rensselaer counties. As part of Emma Willard’s community-service curriculum, SOAR members volunteer at the shelter every Wednesday to provide animal care, maintain the shelter, and help with promotion and fundraising. At last year’s spaghetti dinner, SOAR raised more than $1,000.

The movie is free and open to the public. Tickets for snacks are available from SOAR members and at the front desk of the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society—$6 for adults and $3 for students and children. Raffle tickets will be available during the event.
