The Teen Years: Survival and Success

December 15, 2006

hat factors lead to irrational teenage behavior? How can parents and teachers help—or hurt—a student’s chances of success in college? Is your child ready for the expectations of higher education? Today’s high school students face intense pressure to cope with stressors their parents never dreamed of.

Meeting these challenges at home and in the classroom will be the focus of the third annual Emma Willard School Forum on Faculty Excellence on Wednesday, January 3, 2007, at 9 a.m. in Kiggins Hall on the Emma Willard campus. The forum will feature addresses by two of the leading authors and researchers in education today: Barbara Strauch, medical science and health editor for The New York Times and Barrett Seaman, former reporter and special projects editor for Time magazine. Strauch, the author of The Primal Teen: What New Discoveries about the Teenage Brain Tell Us about Our Kids (Anchor, 2004) will speak at 10 a.m. Seaman, author of Binge: What Your College Student Won’t Tell You, will speak at 1 p.m. Book-signings will be held in the Dietel Library and Gallery following each address.

The Emma Willard Forum on Faculty Excellence is open to the public. A $10 fee includes lunch on the Emma Willard campus. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and is available at the door. Lunch will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants can also register online at www.emmawillard.org/facultyforum; or by calling (518) 833-1328 before December 20.

The Forum on Faculty Excellence is the third annual event sponsored by Emma Willard School to encourage the introduction and discussion of cutting-edge educational issues. The event will be attended by Emma Willard’s entire faculty, as well as teachers and educational administrators from throughout the Capital District.

Media inquiries about the second Emma Willard Forum on Faculty Excellence should be directed to Susan Geary at sgeary@emmawillard.org, (518) 833-1786.

When Emma Hart Willard first established her school in Troy, 90 girls from around the country were enrolled in math, science, history, foreign language, and literature courses. Willard herself not only served as instructor, she wrote a number of textbooks used at her school and throughout America.
