Women, Power, and Possibility

How do young women use the power of their intellect and the energy of their passion to make positive change in today’s world? How can we equip Emma Willard students to join our alumnae and many other dedicated women in this vital effort? At Women, Power, and Possibility we will hear from a group of young women already making their mark around the globe. They will examine the issues and contemplate the many possibilities that emerge when women translate their beliefs into action with commitment and conviction. Learn more on our Symposium page. This is a required event for students.

Parent Days

Come to Parent Days, October 17–18, and experience firsthand your daughter’s life at Emma Willard. On Friday, visit classes, socialize with other parents, get acquainted with your daughter’s friends and classmates, attend athletic events, and enjoy a showcase of Emma talent. On Saturday, you’ll have opportunities to meet her advisor, teachers, houseparent, and coaches. These individuals are available only during the scheduled hours, and it is your daughter’s responsibility to make these appointments in advance. Register here for Parent Days.

New Course Offerings for 2008–2009

When students made their course selections for this academic year, they had a number of new classes from which to choose. Our faculty are always refining our curriculum, creating new classes that will enhance their departments’ offerings and challenge our students. Here are just a few of the new classes offered this year:

Introduction to Opera introduces students to the great operatic works. Students analyze the characters and plots that drive the dramas and study the development of this musical genre. They also study the lives and artistry of the great operatic composers, librettists, and singers.

In Community-Based Art students study art as a tool for social change and examine the way art can function at every level of society.  Through observing, creative problem solving, developing connections, critical analysis, uncovering patterns, experimentation and risk taking, students work collaboratively to define and create community art projects within and beyond the Emma Willard community.

Offered as an interdisciplinary course by the English and history departments, The Hudson offers students the opportunity to examine the historical and literary footprints of the greater Hudson valley as they appreciate the interconnections among geography, people, climate, art, architecture, and ethos. Field trips are an essential component of this course.

Writers in Place: Setting & Psyche explores the premise that where we live, have traveled, yearn to settle, or simply pass through powerfully shapes us into who we are and who we become. In this course we study poetry, fiction, and non-fiction to understand the impact that real and imagined places have on us as readers and writers.

As a continuation to last year’s newly offered introductory Chinese language course, Chinese II helps students strengthen their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. They develop their knowledge of Chinese characters and improve their understanding of Chinese culture, while gradually learning new vocabulary and sentence patterns.

Do you “believe” in global warming? Is it really happening, or is it just media hype? And, if it really is occurring, are humans the cause of it? What is the scientific evidence for the various claims about this issue? Environmental Studies: Global Warming answers these questions and more by integrating science with public policy, economics, and politics.
