Year .5 unit
Our world is filled with movement…a slow step, a quick step, a glide, a leap – the dance of the waves. All movement can be reflected through simple to complex physical expressions and these expressions can become a dance. Contemporary dance is a style of dance that draws from the complete range of human movement potential and is not limited to one prescribed vocabulary. Understanding the range of human movement, studying the possibilities, and experimenting and playing with those discoveries gives this dance form endless possibilities.
In this introductory level course, students learn warm-up exercises and movement combinations that develop strength and flexibility. The knowledge and tools gained through these exercises become their base material to begin playing with movement, musicality, space and partnerships for developing their final performance material. Along with physical training, class activities include discussions, participation in master classes with visiting artists, and written and verbal observations and critiques.
Black leotards and black footless tights are required for performances. Leotards and footless tights or leggings of any color are accepted for class attire. This course may be repeated for credit.
No previous experience is necessary.
