Faculty
ur
school’s small classes are most definitely an asset, but that’s
just part of the story. Emma Willard teachers take a real interest in you—not
just the grades you get, how much you study, what you thought of Mill on
the Floss, or your grasp of polynomials. Dynamic exchange extends outside
class to the dining room, the dorms, the red “tomato” chairs
in the library, and cyberspace. Three-quarters of our more than 50 faculty
members live on campus, and the rest are nearby, allowing them to be not
only
accessible but
generous when it comes to their time and teaching.
Emma Willard’s faculty members are first and foremost dedicated
teachers and mentors. Unlike those at many other schools, our faculty members
are not required to live in the residence halls and coach a team—though
many do. Instead, they are able to devote their time to their disciplines
and be readily available to students outside of class. Emma teachers are
also free to take on tasks that relate to their interests, such as training
a student for a top-10 finish in the regional Shakespeare competition or
facilitating roundtable discussions about world affairs. Emma Willard attracts instructors
who like to learn and love to teach. Ongoing lively exchange
with motivated students keeps them here.
Lifelong learning is modeled by Emma Willard faculty members
who take themselves out of their traditional element from time to time—to
exhibit their own artwork, or sit in on classes to study art history, morality
and law, digital imaging, or Caribbean lit. And Emma Willard’s sabbatical
policy supports faculty adventures of all kinds; from their experiences,
our teachers bring renewed energy and dynamic points of view to the classroom
and the larger school community.
