Making Friends at Emma Willard

At Emma Willard, girls are quick to introduce themselves and slow to judge. Cliques are conspicuously absent—you won’t find lunch tables only for field hockey players, boarders, or juniors. The girl who gets to breakfast last will always have a seat at the table. It’s this climate of inclusion and respect that exemplifies Emma, and makes it possible to form fast friendships that will last a lifetime.

It’s common for Emma Willard students to turn to each other for academic support, too. Ask a classmate to review an English paper knowing she will help you with compassion and respect. Emma girls are close knit and open minded—a combination that distinguishes our campus community.

And among the many types of diversity on our campus, we especially celebrate the diversity of ideas. The result is a community that values itself as a whole while respecting the range of independent thought within it.

As both a boarding and day school, Emma attracts students from near and far. You might go off campus to a friend’s home for the weekend, or she may spend a night in the dorm. Activities such as dinners with advisors or special events like the sophomore class trip to Lake George bring students together in different ways, in different settings.

The first year class go creative during Spirit Week, and their extraordinary show of Emma enthusiasm and teamwork earned them an ice cream party on the Senior Triangle.

Emma Willard’s student body reflects a richness of cultures and backgrounds. Almost one in five students comes from outside the U.S., bringing a global perspective to classroom debates and late-night conversations in the residence halls.
