Summer CommunityOur Staff
Our teachers are largely graduate students and young professionals. They are an amazing group who boast strong resumes and a dedication to teaching. Our Resident Advisors, including recent alumnae from Emma Willard, have experience living and working in a residential community and are always available to the girls on their halls. They also lead a variety of afternoon and evening activities – everything from volleyball and swimming to panel discussions and team-building exercises. Prior to the program’s opening, the staff spends a week together on campus. They prepare for the program, collaborate on ideas, and tailor the curriculum and activities to the myriad resources available on- and off-campus. Program DirectorsThis summer we are delighted to have Joe Tamer return as our GirlSummer Program Director. Joe came to Emma Willard in 2002 as an instructor in the science department. He holds a B.S. in Biology, an M.S. in Molecular Biology, and an M.Ed. In Curriculum Development. In addition to teaching at Emma Willard, he also works with the Inner Journey Program and serves as the advisor for Emma Now, a web-based News Services. Joe lives on campus with his wife and three children. As Program Director, Joe oversees all aspects of the program, with the top priorities being safety, academics, community, and fun. Above all, he helps foster an environment in which girls learn, grow, and have fun. With three years of GirlSummer under her belt, Gabriela Vega returns as our Academic Director. As such, she specifically addresses the academic aspects of the program, upholding the school’s high standards during the summer. She makes sure that the teaching staff is well-supported and that the students are engaged and growing through their class work. The Residential Life Director oversees the residential and community-living components of the program that are integral to the experience here. Our StudentsGirlSummer has welcomed students from 48 states and 11 countries. From Venezuela to Korea, from South Carolina to California, our students always represent a rich variety of backgrounds and interests. Our hall-based communities provide the foundation for long-lasting friendships. Hall lounges become social centers, allowing the girls a relaxed space in which to hang out together. GirlSummer staff also live on each hall, providing 24-hour supervision and offering an open door to any student. The Director makes all roommate assignments before the session begins. Room and hall assignments are based on age, grade, and personal profile. Girls are grouped by age onto halls, and each hall has a kitchen and lounge area. All halls offer both single and double rooms. While some girls request a roommate, most girls are attending the program on their own, making new friends the moment the session begins. |
