Digital Media
In response to requests from previous summers' students, we are excited to offer Digital Media this summer.
The course culminates in the creation of a short, digital work; through the process, students learn the important
arts of storyboarding and communicating ideas as well as how to use the creative tools and software
integral to digital media production.
The future of entertainment lies in the digital presentation of media. From streaming movies to downloadable
content, people are watching more and more entertainment through digital technology. But is this changing the
way we experience media? How can we, as fans and viewers of media, better understand the content that
we watch? This course takes a "hands-on" approach to the study of digital media. Through interaction with the
process of writing, storyboarding, designing and finally taping and editing digital media, the students learn both
the "how" of digital media presentation and also the "why."
We start at the basics, with a discussion of what makes good digital entertainment and with examples of digital
media. Students then work together to collaboratively write scripts, storyboard and videotape their project.
By working together, students learn not only how to share information, but also how collaboration improves
creative work. Students also learn about digital editing, the process of selecting clips and shots for a final cut,
and how audio and video can sync together.
For the final project, students create a short digital media video and present it to the GirlSummer audience on
the final night of the program. Digital Media students leave the program not only with a DVD of their digital work,
but also with new creative tools and a better understanding of the culture and methods driving contemporary
digital media.
Digital video equipment: GirlSummer provides students with basic digital video cameras; however, girls are also
welcome to bring their own cameras. We keep all cameras safely locked in the lab when not in use.
