Mock Trial or Model UNMock Trial (Session 1 and 2 only)Mock trial is one of the fastest growing extracurricular activities among secondary school students. Guided by a model that is used in most law schools around the country, students study the structure and process of dispute resolution and learn how to prepare and present mock trial cases as both attorneys and witnesses. This program covers the individual steps of a trial from opening statements to closing arguments and the fundamentals of the legal system from pleadings to judgments. Students also learn to analyze complex issues, construct and present effective arguments, assert and respond to objections, and develop convincing witness personas. The program culminates in the preparation and presentation of a complete mock trial case. Last summer, the mock trial class visited the Supreme Court of the State of New York. Though trips vary from year to year, students have the opportunity to witness a real case in progress, then apply what they have seen to their own mock trial practice. Model UN (Session 2 and 3 only)
Students study the major bodies of the UN, from the Secretariat to the General Assembly to the Court of Justice. They learn about the daily activities of the UN, from adopting resolutions to providing humanitarian relief to conducting peacekeeping operations. This program teaches a thorough understanding of the structure and the workings of the UN. Throughout the session, students learn skills needed to be effective participants. Topics covered include researching countries and issues, being a convincing and effective representative, drafting resolutions and proposals, making persuasive speeches and presentations, and the fundamentals of parliamentary procedure. |
