Emma Willard School

Campus

Emma Willard’s 137-acre campus on Mount Ida, in Troy, NY, provides an extraordinary backdrop for the school’s physical plant. Many of the school’s thirty buildings are built in the collegiate Tudor Gothic style. Filled with unique interior hardwood paneling, hand-carved doorways, and a collection of mischievous gargoyles, they embody a wonderful spirit of craftsmanship and history. The beautiful, historic buildings contain the school’s cathedral-like reading room, classrooms, offices, main auditorium, dance studio, theater, residence halls, dining facilities, student center and chapel.

The art, music, and library complex opened in 1967. The airy, open spaces are oriented around a central courtyard. The contemporary science center caps one end of the main campus. The modern gymnasium boasts a competition-sized swimming pool, basketball courts, weight room, cardiovascular equipment, and dance area. Our girls can enjoy the pool and gymnasium during hot summer days and the outdoor track and tennis courts on cool mornings and evenings.

The residence halls are contained in three connected buildings. Each building features a large, beautifully appointed gathering space which may be used for morning meetings, evening activities, movies, or just visiting with friends. All halls and floors have kitchens and lounges. There are single and double rooms on each hall, and while rooms vary in layout and size, each is comfortable and well maintained. On the first night of each session, small groups of girls gather in their lounge, meet their neighbors, and get to know their residential advisors.

Tradition

In addition to fostering the highest level of learning, Emma Willard School has a long and strong tradition of community, respect for fellow students, and respect for the school. While the girls at our summer program may live here for only two to six weeks, we feel it is still enough time to honor the spirit of community and respect that is integral to the Emma Willard experience. Girls attending our summer program will learn as much about living independently and sharing a community as they will about their chosen course of study.

Throughout the year, resident faculty live on campus and in the residence halls; they are a valuable resource for the boarding students. During the summer, their presence gives the campus a feeling of home-away-from home. While they may not be part of the GirlSummer staff, they are members of the Emma Willard community with whom the summer students share a home.

Each session, a member of the school’s administrative faculty introduces the summer students to the school’s history and traditions. This is followed by our opening night pizza party, a tour of campus, and then a team scavenger hunt. During the sessions, GirlSummer students also benefit from workshops offered by faculty and alumnae.

The school has a two-hundred-year history, and this is reflected in all aspects of the school, from the collegiate Gothic buildings to the wood-paneled great rooms, from the high standards of learning to the strong sense of community. At GirlSummer, we uphold respect for each other and for the school. Our teachers and residential advisors work hard to foster a strong community of girls who live, laugh, and learn together.
