When Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage’s husband passed away in 1908 and left her a sizeable estate, Mrs. Sage was determined to use her fortune for the public good. In doing so, she became one of America’s great philanthropists and among the first American women to use her wealth in this manner.
In 1910 Mrs. Sage, Troy Female Seminary Class of 1847, provided Miss Kellas with the funds for the first three buildings on Emma Willard’s Mount Ida campus. After Mrs. Sage’s death in 1918, Emma Willard School was also the grateful recipient of a generous bequest.
The Sage Society seeks to honor individuals who have included Emma Willard School in their financial and philanthropic plans. Gifts include, but are not limited to, bequest intentions, charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, gifts of life insurance and retirement plan assets. The school is immensely grateful to the members of The Sage Society for their vision and support.
