Emma offers many opportunities to take your learning further by traveling abroad with one of our short-term, faculty-led AWAY Programs.

These transformative, perspective-changing experiences allow you to gain awareness and understanding of issues and opportunities beyond a normal radius of operation to develop the confidence and skill set necessary to take action to serve and shape your world.

  • Great Cities: Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, London / A Grand Quartet

    Join us as we venture to the U.K. and Ireland March 17 - March 26, 2019. We start by spending 2 days in Dublin, where we go on a guided city walk and sightseeing tour, including St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Trinity College, home of the Book of Kells. We will then travel to Northern Ireland and spend 2 days exploring Belfast city on a guided sightseeing tour and visiting Giant's Causeway. From there, we take a ferry and travel to Edinburgh, where we spend 2 days exploring many Scottish landmarks, including Edinburgh Castle. On Day 8, we travel to London via train and spend 2 days discovering all London has to offer, including Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and Westminster Abbey.
  • Civil Rights Tour

    Take a historical, in-depth look at the key locations, events, and people associated with the Civil Rights Movement and the history of racial injustice in the United States, including the exploration of culturally and socio-politically relevant topics of the present day. Stops on the tour include Washington, D.C.; Greensboro, NC; Selma, Birmingham, and Montgomery, AL and Memphis TN.
  • Kenya

    We will stay at the Kakamega Care Center and be immersed in the life of the children and staff.  We will also experience Kenyan culture through day trips to local families and markets, and enjoy a safari trip near Nairobi. 
  • Florida Keys

    Sponsored through Mote Aquarium in Sarasota, FL, Emma students will have the opportunity to learn more about Mote’s mission to protect our oceans.  Emma students will have the opportunity to snorkel all over the Florida Keys’ coral reefs, visit a sea turtle hospital, and learn more about Mote’s coral restoration foundation.  The days will be spent in the water with a snorkel and fins, on a boat touring the most southern part of the sunshine state, and in a classroom to debrief the day’s adventures.  One day will be dedicated to cleaning up local beaches and learning about the significant impact of plastic on the ocean and its inhabitants. Emma students will stay in the dorms at Mote’s Lab in Summerland Key- The Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration.
  • Spain

    Visit Madrid, the capital of Spain and enjoy the famous Prado and Reina Sofía Museums. Then head on to La Herradura, a charming beach town in Andalusia to stay with host families and take occasional language classes that will help you on your way.  Learn the art of making the Spanish guitar with one of the last true artisans left.  After, tour the Nerja caves, a series of huge caverns filled with massive dripping stalactites and stalagmites.  Explore the beautiful city of Granada and enjoy the views of El Alhambra, a magnificent ancient Arab city-palace set on a hill.  Take a hike of quiet white Moorish villages up in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
