Emma offers many opportunities to take your learning further by traveling abroad with one of our short-term, faculty-led AWAY Programs.

These transformative, perspective-changing experiences allow you to gain awareness and understanding of issues and opportunities beyond a normal radius of operation to develop the confidence and skill set necessary to take action to serve and shape your world.

  • France - Immersion experience and homestay

    A Language Immersion experience and homestay in Tours, France.
     
    Classes
    o    Daily classes each weekday
    o    7 students max per class
    o    Workshops each week: cooking, French traditions, etc.

    Homestay
    o    2 Emma girls per family
    o    Breakfast and dinner daily with families
    o    Cultural immersion exposure

    Sightseeing
    o    Visiting several châteaux
    o    Museum in Tours
    o    1 day visit to Paris: la Sainte-Chappelle, Les Champs –Elysées, tour of the Quartier Latin, etc.
  • Galapagos Islands - Bringing Evolution & Biodiversity to life

    The Galapagos Islands offer unparalleled biological diversity.
    o    Visit the most famous wildlife-watching destination in the world
    o    See firsthand the spectacle of unchecked environmental adaptations that inspired
    Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection
    o    Students will experience how organisms have evolved to fill the distinct niches that  we discuss in biology class

    Visit the Charles Darwin Research Center to see the giant tortoises and some baby tortoises housed in a renowned captive breeding program

    Explore Natural Beauty and Impressive Species Diversity!
    o    Private chartered boats to visit 3 different islands in the Galapagos (San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, & Isabela) in the company of two certified native guides.
    o    Snorkeling with nearby sea lions, flamingos, penguins,giant sea turtles, swimming iguanas & more!
    o    Hiking to view frigate birds and marine wildlife.
    o    Swim at Las Grietas, frequently celebrated as one of the most impressive swimming holes in the world!

  • Italy - Young Women’s Leadership

    Participate in leadership discussions and workshops with women leaders and innovators in Italy while exploring the rich cultural history and sites in Rome and Tuscany.

  • Kenya - Care Center in Kakamega

    o    The Care Center KOCC is a non-profit devoted to improving the lives of at-risk kids in Kakamega, Kenya.
    o    We will spend a week at the KOCC interacting with the kids and staff.
    o    During our stay at KOCC, we will share the work, language, food, music, and love of our Kenyan hosts.

    Other activities
    o    We will visit Nairobi, the largest city in East Africa.
    o    We will go on a safari, and see MANY African animals. In past years, we have visited Lake Victoria and an elephant orphanage.

  • Spain - Choir Performance and Art Appreciation Tour

    This trip is open to members of choir, musicians, arts students and arts enthusiasts!

    -Members of Choir will present 2-3 concerts during our trip
    -We will explore the art and culture of Spain

    Cities include: Madrid, Toledo, Granada, Cordoba and Seville

    Travelers will have the opportunity to see incredible architecture and artworks as well as experience Spanish culture and food. There may even be a flamenco lesson! Travelers study or speak Spanish will have the opportunity to use your language skills.

  • Great Cities: Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, London / A Grand Quartet

    The trip starts in Dublin, where Emma Students go on a guided city walk and sightseeing tour, including St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Trinity College, home of the Book of Kells. Students will then travel to Northern Ireland and spend 2 days exploring Belfast city on a guided sightseeing tour and visiting Giant's Causeway. From there, students take a ferry and travel to Edinburgh, where they spend 2 days exploring many Scottish landmarks, including Edinburgh Castle. On Day 8, students travel to London via train and spend 2 days discovering all London has to offer, including Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and Westminster Abbey.
  • Civil Rights Tour

    Take a historical, in-depth look at the key locations, events, and people associated with the Civil Rights Movement and the history of racial injustice in the United States, including the exploration of culturally and socio-politically relevant topics of the present day. Stops on the tour include Washington, D.C.; Greensboro, NC; Selma, Birmingham, and Montgomery, AL and Memphis TN.
  • Kenya

    Stay at the Kakamega Care Center where you be immersed in the life of the children and staff.  You will also experience Kenyan culture through day trips to local families and markets, and enjoy a safari trip near Nairobi. 
  • Florida Keys

    Sponsored through Mote Aquarium in Sarasota, FL, Emma students will have the opportunity to learn more about Mote’s mission to protect our oceans.  Emma students will have the opportunity to snorkel all over the Florida Keys’ coral reefs, visit a sea turtle hospital, and learn more about Mote’s coral restoration foundation.  The days will be spent in the water with a snorkel and fins, on a boat touring the most southern part of the sunshine state, and in a classroom to debrief the day’s adventures.  One day will be dedicated to cleaning up local beaches and learning about the significant impact of plastic on the ocean and its inhabitants. Emma students will stay in the dorms at Mote’s Lab in Summerland Key- The Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration.
  • Spain

    Visit Madrid, the capital of Spain and enjoy the famous Prado and Reina Sofía Museums. Then head on to La Herradura, a charming beach town in Andalusia to stay with host families and take occasional language classes that will help you on your way.  Learn the art of making the Spanish guitar with one of the last true artisans left.  After, tour the Nerja caves, a series of huge caverns filled with massive dripping stalactites and stalagmites.  Explore the beautiful city of Granada and enjoy the views of El Alhambra, a magnificent ancient Arab city-palace set on a hill.  Take a hike of quiet white Moorish villages up in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
