Junior Year

Students meet with the college counseling team to strategize for retaking the PSAT in the fall of their junior year, and then again when the results come in.
Juniors officially begin the college process in January when they are assigned their counselor, given a handbook, and asked to complete a college counseling questionnaire and autobiographical essay. Parents are also engaged in the process at this time and asked to complete a separate questionnaire. Once girls (and parents, if possible) submit their questionnaire, they are invited to begin meeting with their college counselor.

At the initial meeting, girls and their counselors review courses, grades, extracurricular activities, standardized test scores, summer plans, and most importantly, their academic and personal interests and goals in effort to develop an initial list of colleges that fit their profile and preferences. They also review the next steps in the college process, including researching colleges, visiting campuses, interviewing, and preparing to write the college essay.

In February, juniors participate in a two-day college admissions retreat at Skidmore College to learn about college life and the application process. They are advised to take the SAT in January and again in May or June, and to also take at least two subject tests in June of junior year.
