Service to Emma: Sarah Goodwin Soule '77

Honors an alumna who has demonstrated extraordinary interest in the school through dedicated volunteer service that has inspired others.
When asked about the why behind her four decades of service to her alma mater, Sarah Goodwin Soule offers a gratitude-filled response: “At Emma Willard, I learned to read well, to think creatively, and I became actively engaged in issues that matter. I found myself challenged academically and was surrounded by girls who, like me, valued education and loved to learn. At Emma Willard, I made friends who are, even now, among those I consider the closest and most trusted people in my life. I am grateful every day for the education I received at Emma Willard.”
A tireless promoter of Emma Willard School for 45 years, the roles Sarah has played in her alumnae life run the gamut from bulletin reporter to reunion organizer, from active engagement on the Alumnae Association Council to class agent, loyal donor to spokesperson for The Sage Society, and more.
Giving tours for the Emma Willard admissions office and serving as head tour guide launched her professional life; Sarah has held positions in admissions at Champlain College and in admissions and college counseling in the independent school world of her beloved Vermont. She always has an eye out for future Emma students.
As might be expected for an engaged alumna leader, Sarah took an active role in the extracurricular life of the school as a student. She was able to rally others to participate in the life of the school, a talent that she has demonstrated over and over again in her volunteer life. A trusted and responsible student, her leadership acumen as a proctor was preceded by her role as a prefect while participating in the junior exchange with The Thacher School in California.
We are grateful for Sarah’s deep love for Emma Willard and her strong ties to the past, present, and future of her school.
For giving generously and faithfully of her time and talents to her alma mater, a grateful Emma Willard community proudly bestows upon Sarah Goodwin Soule ’77 the 2022 Service to Emma Willard Award.
