Emma Willard Senior Anna B. Wins Albany-Tula Alliance Essay Contest

Katie Coakley
Emma Willard School senior Anna B. has won first place in the Albany-Tula Alliance's 2019 Student Essay Contest!

The Albany-Tula Alliance was established in 1991 to encourage cultural, educational and business exchanges between the greater Capital Region of New York and the city of Tula, Russia in effort to foster deeper understanding of people from each country.

For their 2019 essay contest, entrants were asked to write 1,500 words around the significance of the Nelson Mandela quote, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, it goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”

Anna, a Russian-American, researched the “foreign language effect” and dissected Mandela’s past and the use of language in foreign interactions to make a connection between the quote and the importance language plays when interacting with those of different social and cultural norms.

Through her research she discovered the many ways language can affect us as human beings, including how learning a second language can in itself increase the intelligence of an individual.

For winning the contest, Anna has earned a $1,000 prize. She says she is deeply grateful for the Albany-Tula Alliance for giving student’s this opportunity each year.

“Winning this contest has not only supported me as I begin my college education, but it has also helped me discover more about the country I come from as well as learn about the many unique qualities that languages possess,” says Anna.

Please join Emma Willard School in commending Anna on this impressive recognition!
