At 2:08 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, the opening notes of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” started playing throughout the buildings of Emma Willard School. Students, faculty, and staff paused their classes and work, curious as to what was happening.
They then heard Head of School Jenny Rao’s enthusiastic voice come through the intercom with a very exciting announcement: that the next day, May 1, would be Principal’s Play Day!
Ms. Rao had planned an on-campus carnival with an exciting line-up of events and activities, including a caricature artist, photo booth, miniature golf, an extreme dance party bounce house, sumo wrestling suits, a wrecking ball, bungee basketball, an 8-foot basketball hoop, giant Twister and JENGA, a dunking booth, and more!
Emma Dining prepared a special menu featuring corn dogs, hamburgers, veggie and black bean burgers, pasta salad, and other delicious foods. For dessert, students could enjoy treats from Pop’s Kettle Corn and Emack & Boilo’s Ice Cream food trucks.
Play Day festivities began at 10 a.m., allowing students plenty of time to sleep in before engaging in a day of enjoyment. Students filled the gym, taking part in the many activities, laughing and relaxing with their friends.
At 11:30 a.m. Ms. Rao bravely entered the dunk tank to cheers from the crowd and was a gracious dunkee. She was followed by Dean of Students and Wellbeing Shelley Maher, Athletic Director Liz Parry, and Emma Dining General Manager Kevin Bayer.
Thank you to Ms. Rao, Ms. Cioffi, and everyone who made Principal’s Play Day such a wonderful and fun break in this busy time of year.
