GirlSummer: Investing in the Future

Julie Clancy and Suzanne Dewey
Investing in girls is what we do. We know the research confirms that one of the more effective methods to impact our world for the better is to invest in girls and women. Emma Willard School’s founder and namesake knew that empowering young women helps shape the world.

GirlSummer keeps this tradition and vision active in the summer weeks with varied programming and events for 255 girls, ages six through fourteen. On any one day, you might see girls learning survival skills, learning about women heroes (we call them Sheroes) throughout history and in current events, practicing coding, or taking to the stage with a new dance routine. These girls may come from next door and across the world to join in two- and four-week programs that make the most of our all-girl learning and living environment.

This past weekend, GirlSummer hosted its first ever InvestHER Series workshop focused on personal investment. The series included three workshops: GirlSummer campers took part in investing in her future (financial empowerment), investing in her present (mindful movement), and investing in her community (flower arrangements were made for the residents of Van Rensselaer Manor). We are grateful for the inspiring leadership of these workshops: Georgia Kelly of Bank of America; Michael Cannon of MorganStanley; Yoga teachers Jammella Anderson and Morgan Bernat; Nia teacher Gemma Allen; and florist Pesha King.

Last week, GirlSummer celebrated history with one of our current Emma students. In honor of  the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, Katie V. ’21, launched her own rocket from the Emma playing field. Our 255 GirlSummer campers, staffers, and onlookers provided the traditional countdown from ten and cheered mightily as the rocket took flight. We are very proud of Katie and are thrilled to have joined her in honoring all who contributed to the success of the Apollo 11 mission.

Three cheers for GirlSummer!
