Valerie Phillips Parsegian '61 - Service to Emma Willard

One former Head of School characterized Valerie Phillips Parsegian ’61 as the total package: “Intellectual, supportive, generous in all ways, and fun!”

A retired independent school teacher with a brilliant mind, Val has remained incredibly involved with Emma Willard School since graduation. She served on Emma Willard’s Board of Trustees during Frances O’Connor’s tenure as principal in the 1970s, has taught ad-hoc classes, and has served on her class reunion committee repeatedly (and as reunion chair in 1990). Val was a speaker/panelist and moderator for the school’s Bicentennial, and her service continues, most recently as a member of the Alumnae Association Council (AAC) from 2014–2020 and member of the AAC’s Communications Committee and Senior Initiation Committee during that time.

Val has been a prolific correspondent with school leadership for six decades, offering crisp and cogent commentary from her vast experience on many sides of the education enterprise. Part historian offering wisdom from the past and part muse offering authentic inspiration for the way forward, Val is a treasured student of her alma mater. Not one for flourishes or less-than-meaningful gestures, she maintains a laser focus on the mission of education to bring students and institutions to the fulfillment of their potential.
For her generous, intelligent, and joyous labor on behalf of her beloved alma mater, the Emma Willard community proudly bestows upon Valerie Phillips Parsegian ’61 the 2021 Service to Emma Willard Award.
