Back in 1995, my sister Libby was already a senior and my mom felt as though I needed to be provided with more structure and an academic challenge. She was right; it was the best decision she ever made for me. I still remember my admissions interview with Margaret Roach—it was a life-changer. Now, I am here because, as time passed in my adult life, I consistently felt as though I wanted to be part of something that makes me feel good and has the potential to impact the world in a positive way. I have always been a firm believer in an Emma Willard education and the change makers of the world

 

I drive down Pawling Avenue each day, and see Sage tower emerge above the rooftops—my heart beats a bit faster and a little smile comes across my face. I have this sense of purpose and coming home when I’m at Emma. Every day I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude to be part of this amazing place and all the possibilities it lends. I then get out of my car, chat with Danna O’Connell, head of the Emma Fund, about a new show on Netflix, the gross tea she drinks each morning, and I steal a Life Saver from her bowl. I then go to my office, review the biggest news stories of the day (the importance of being up-to-date on current events started when I was a student here), have a few meetings, enjoy lunch with all the kids, faculty, and staff, and work a bit more. Then I head home to my other full-time job of being a mom to Cecilia and Penn.     

 

How incredibly humble the alums are! For the last three years it is my distinct pleasure to call an alum to let them know they have been honored by their fellow classmates with an Alumnae Recognition Award and every time I hear “Why me?” It isn’t that they aren’t confident, but these women just never really understand the true impact they have on the world and their peers. It is truly inspirational!

 

Kiggins!  Kiggins was and still is where all the action happens. You get to hear the incredible voices of our students singing, making a speech, or screaming during a pep rally.  It is where the beauty of our community is on full display.
