All-School Meeting Focuses on Safety and Community Guidelines

The well-being and safety of our students is the utmost priority at Emma Willard School. As such, our first all-school meeting of a new academic year focuses on ensuring the entire community knows and understands the school’s policies, procedures, protections, and cultural norms.

Head of Facilities Pete McCorkle opened this year’s meeting with an announcement about the first upcoming emergency shelter-in-place drill and explanation of what to do in emergency situations.

A review of our community manual Fine Print followed, led by Emma’s Dean of Students and Wellbeing Shelley Maher and Director of Student Life Emily Snyder. Ms. Maher and Ms. Snyder led everyone through the many updates made in this year’s Fine Print, including a general reorganization of the content, and expansions to our safe harbor, bullying, sexual misconduct, amnesty, and survivor support policies, among others. They also reminded the community about our code of conduct, dress code, and device use policies, and announced new extended hours for our health center.

Ms. Snyder also described the unwritten cultural rules of Emma, which aid in making the school a safe and healthy community. These include acknowledging and supporting others, honoring each other’s differences, caring for our buildings, grounds, and community spaces; taking responsibilities for mistakes, and keeping in-person and social media interactions positive and fun.

A more in-depth conversation of all of these policies and procedures will be discussed in advising groups and throughout the year.
