The Fall 2024/Winter 2025 edition of Emma Willard School’s Signature magazine provides a brief introduction to our recently announced 18th Head of School Dr. Karen Lassey, while revisiting Emma Hart Willard’s connection with the Marquis de Lafayette. We follow two current students for a day in their life at Emma and take a peak into two recent Curriculum Innovation Projects.
Head of School Jenny Rao leads into this issue by reflecting on the sense of purpose that propels the Emma Willard community to continue striving to achieve the vision of our strategic plan. “We all seek a sense of purpose in life,” she begins. “And, while the definition of one’s purpose is unique and everchanging, the journey to find purpose and meaning in our lives is one we all share. Emma Willard School’s mission emphasizes the essential, enduring importance of finding one’s purpose in life—and then using it to shape and serve the world around us. That charge connects generations of Emma Willard students, past, present, and future.”
Our features for this issue highlight several aspects of our community: the sense of history we find in our founder’s relationship with Lafayette, ingenuity in the classroom as demonstrated in innovations to our history and science courses, and a window into the life of a boarding student and a day student. We hear from History Instructor Katie Duglin on thinking critically about world governments and from Theatre Instructor Faith Lawson on building community.
In this issue, we also celebrate the Massry family’s impact on the Infinite Horizon campaign. Highlights also include photos from Revels, a look at recent work on civic discourse, and a student project transcribing letters in the school archives.
