Alumnae of Color Gather in New York

Emma Willard School recently hosted a gathering in Brooklyn, New York, for alumnae of color to reconnect, share personal stories and experiences, and meet Prince Botchway, the newly appointed head of institutional equity and inclusion.

This enriching gathering allowed alumnae of color to reflect on their journeys both during their time at Emma and in their lives since graduation. Highlighting these alumnae’s personal experiences and incorporating their feedback into the institution’s operations and practices has been a critical part of the formation of the office of DEI at Emma.

“It was a truly wholesome experience to meet and listen to alumnae stories, reflecting on their time at Emma Willard and beyond," said Botchway. "Gathering with our alumnae highlights the importance of honoring the past while working toward a future where equity and belonging are central. I look forward to continued partnership and collaboration with our alumnae.”

Mr. Botchway had the privilege of sharing some of the exciting developments taking place within the Office of DEI, as well as his hopes and aspirations at Emma. The alumnae expressed great enthusiasm for ongoing collaboration, offering valuable insights that will undoubtedly continue to shape the future of equity and inclusion at Emma Willard. Mr. Botchway was joined at the event by Karen Brifu-Lacy ’04, trustee and chair of the diversity, equity, and inclusion committee of the Board.

This event reaffirmed the power of Emma Willard’s alumnae network and the shared commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment. We look forward to continuing this partnership and working together to enhance the Emma experience for all students.
