Exactly one year to the day after Emma Willard School broke ground on new faculty housing, the Board of Trustees joined the Emma community for a ribbon-cutting to open Tangeman Commons.

Head of School Dr. Karen Lassey welcomed trustees, faculty, staff, and representatives from construction partners Consigli and SWBR in celebrating the completion of 12 months of design and construction, resulting in a delightfully expanded on-campus neighborhood for our faculty.

“Today, as we open the doors to these new homes, we are opening a new chapter for our campus community,” Dr. Lassey shared. “By providing new and updated homes for our faculty, we are ensuring that the heart of our mission—those who labor to deliver extraordinary education on Mount Ida—can be more fully integrated into the life of our community. These new dwellings signal our commitment to the adults who give their all to guide students to a future of serving and shaping their world.”

Fulfilling a priority of the school’s strategic plan, Leading with Purpose, the new housing will better support our living and learning community and affirm our appreciation for our faculty’s incomparable professionalism and dedication.

Dr. Lassey expressed the school’s gratitude for the leadership of the Board of Trustees, Campaign Steering Committee (led by Wendy Graham ’85 and Linda Gill Anderson ’77, and honorary co-chairs Vicky Winterer ’61 and Susie Hunter ’68), and those who helped identify faculty housing offerings as a key priority in the strategic plan that guided Infinite Horizon: The Campaign for Emma Willard School.

“This beautiful project truly reflects our deep appreciation for the people who make this school such a magical place—our faculty,” remarked Board of Trustees Chair Megan Toohey Scremin ’00. “Emma simply would not be the same without their talent, care, creativity, and commitment to our students and to one another.” Ms. Scremin went on to acknowledge the contributions of faithful donors in making Tangeman Commons a reality.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Ms. Scremin shared heartfelt gratitude for all those who made the moment possible through their devotion to the school and the collective mission to educate the next generation of changemakers.

The naming of the faculty housing project honors the legacy and service of Clementine Miller Tangeman (1923), one of the school’s most dedicated volunteers. In 1966, friends and colleagues named the newly built faculty apartments in Mrs. Tangeman’s honor, celebrating her leadership and steadfast support for the teachers who dedicated their lives to girls’ education. Sixty years later, the school continued that legacy by naming this new neighborhood Tangeman Commons.

Faculty members—both those who will live in the new townhomes and those who will be their neighbors in existing housing—joined the ribbon-cutting celebration. Excited new residents will begin moving into their homes in just a few short weeks!
