library leadership committee spring 2024

Since its inception nearly ten years ago, the Library Leadership Committee (LLC) has remained a pillar of student extracurricular life. Under the guidance of Director of Library and Archives Caroline Buinicky and Assistant Director of Research and Archives Stephanie Ross, the LLC has sustained a community dedicated to the growth of Dietel Library. Through curated book displays, campus-wide book clubs and events, or cataloging, the students’ passion for the library is reflected in every project.

Each year, the LLC’s initiatives are shaped by the evolving interests of its members. At the beginning of the semester, the LLC members take index cards and jot down any and every idea they have for events, strategies, and ventures. This semester, the committee is planning a storytime event tailored for EMployee families and siblings of current students. Designed to spark an early love of reading, the event will feature crafts, music, snacks, and a selection of childhood favorite books from the LLC members. During recent planning sessions, students collaborated on marketing strategies, thematic development, and logistics to make this event a success.

Depending on the year, some students are also interested in the technical aspects of the library, including cataloging and archives. Cataloging requires students to identify and label books, while archival work generally requires filing folders and organizing records. This year, one student is working under Ms. Ross’s mentorship to earn Practicum credit for their work in the Emma Willard School Archives.

The LLC’s book clubs remain a favorite, drawing engagement from both students and employees. This year, the clubs are organized by genre—including mystery, romance, science fiction, dystopian, and fantasy—offering a mix of selections from LLC leaders and group participants.

Similarly, the LLC has recently started reading challenges through the library’s online ebook and audiobook platform, Sora—thanks to the initiative of Renata L. ’26. This fall, 46 students and employees joined the challenge and collectively read almost 100,000 minutes! Online reading skyrocketed, with 634 books opened in the fall semester, compared to 82 the year prior. “This is such a beautiful example of the magic that is the LLC!” Ms. Buinicky enthuses, “It empowers students to create and lead something that is exciting to other students while simultaneously promoting the library and reading.”

The LLC also hosts more adventurous initiatives. One of Ms. Ross’s personal favorites—to Ms. Buinicky’s playful dismay—is the library lock-in! This overnight event is a student highlight, featuring fun activities like library-wide hide-and-seek, glow-stick dance parties, Shirley Temples, and readathons. “When the kids are excited about something, it’s incredibly easy to get on board,” Ms. Ross shares—even though it requires an overnight stay at work!

Though these students may sit outside the school’s formal leadership tiers, their impact is significant. For many, the LLC is a creative outlet and a way to give back to the campus. As Goldie P. ’27 shares, “It is so rewarding to help the library transition through the seasons and decorate for the holidays. Being part of the LLC has kept my love of reading alive.”

If bagels and cookies at every meeting aren’t enough of an attraction, the true catalyst for the group’s success is their contagious passion for the library. The group has grown exponentially in the past couple of years—a testament to its popularity, though one that requires more coordination to ensure every member plays a meaningful role. This growth is driven by a clear mission shared by Ms. Ross: "I want the members to feel that they’re impacting the library for the whole community.”
