Aurea Ortiz

Aurea Ortiz joined the Emma Willard School housekeeping staff in 2006. Aurea currently works as site supervisor, helping keep campus running smoothly and in order. We asked her four questions about her many years of experience at Emma...

What brought you to Emma Willard School?

I came to Emma Willard in 2006 on the recommendation of someone while I was looking for a job. Having just had my youngest child, I needed to work to support my family—but I never imagined that Emma would become my family, my second home for what has now been 20 years. I'm so blessed to be here and that my job can touch lives and help girls to feel at home.

What is a typical day in the life at Emma like for you?

It is an active day, full of energy and joy.

Walking through the hallways every day and seeing the students and faculty engaged in their daily activities—always so friendly and enthusiastic—makes you feel happy and a part of this beautiful community.

There is always Shelley Maher’s energetic greeting and her words of motivation and gratitude—"We did it," and "We’re going to make it happen!"—as well as the warm greetings from so many others.

It is a wonderful experience to be here at Emma Willard School.

What is one thing about working at Emma that would surprise people?

At Emma Willard, every person is important and valued.

The sense of connection—built on communication, respect, dedication, and empathy—is palpable.

If there is one thing I admire about this community, it is the ability to integrate students and families from all over the world; this has allowed me to get to know and learn about other countries, their cultures, and their traditions.

A key part of my work has always been ensuring that the girls feel at home and that their environment is safe, clean, and welcoming every day, allowing them to study while also making the school their home.

I am very grateful to be part of this beautiful family.

What were you like in high school?

I was always very active in high school; mathematics and volleyball were my passions. Since my hometown is small, some of my teachers were family members or neighbors, and almost all of us classmates knew one another. It was a wonderful experience that strengthened many bonds of friendship.
