With GirlSummer 2025 just around the corner (starting next week!) we chatted with our Associate Director of Admissions/Director of GirlSummer Michele Solimeno about her time at Emma Willard School! Read on to hear about her favorite parts of the signature summer program, and more below!

#1—What brought you to Emma Willard School?

I had been working in the college admissions world for many years and wanted to make the move to the Capital Region with my husband who had fallen in love with the area after attending UAlbany. When I saw a job posting for an admissions position at an independent school, I began to do my research. After watching many Youtube videos and clicking every tab on the website, I was drawn in by not only the beauty of the school but how passionate the faculty and students were about its mission and their education. I knew that I had to work here and almost four years later, I haven’t looked back since!

#2—What is a typical day-in-the-life at Emma like for you?

Right now I am in full blown GirlSummer planning mode as the director of the program. GirlSummer, Emma’s signature summer program, offers an enriching, personalized, and fun two-week summer experience for campers entering 2nd-9th grades. It also runs the entire month of July which over 28 elective offerings, 40+ staff members and over 200 campers on campus each session. There is a lot of preparation that is needed for the camp day to run smoothly.

One very important task that I love is picking what color the camp shirts are for the staff and campers since they change every year! Faculty and staff that are on campus get a pair of them too and it’s always nice to see others in the GirlSummer swag!

My day now is mostly outside of my traditional office in the Admissions Suite and into my summer office in the gym called the Glass Office. We are preparing the materials for each elective, creating campers schedules and getting the campus ready for our kiddos to arrive!

My favorite tradition is Showcase Day which is the last day of camp where performing and visual arts electives get to show off what they have been working on during the past few weeks of camp!

I can remember my camp days growing up and love to see the buzz on campus with our campers and the energy is just infectious! I like seeing my returning campers and staff enjoy this campus in another way and create memories to last a lifetime! I am so honored that this is apart of my job and to be able to run it this year is truly so exciting!

#3—What is one thing about working at Emma that would surprise people?

How much fun each day really is! Whether it's a tradition happening or celebration of an accomplishment of a staff/faculty member I can honestly say that I truly love what I do here and enjoy my time with the people I work with. Having lunch as a community is a great time to sit and reconnect in an informal way outside of our traditional meetings. Everyone feels like family here and I really enjoy being a part of this community!

#4—What were you like in high school?

I was a typical theatre geek and I loved every minute of it it! If you stop by through the admissions wing from time to time you might catch me singing a tune! I just loved to perform and was in every fall play and spring musical! I also really loved getting involved in many clubs and was a big nerd! I only wish that I would have attended Emma when I was younger to further dive into subject areas that I enjoyed or try something new!
