Pam Gordon is a member of the dining services staff at Emma Willard School. Pam came to Emma Willard in 2017 and, previously, worked running “Pam’s Day Care” from her home before joining the campus community. Pam is well-known among the student body for her kindness and warmth, and is a welcoming presence to the many diners who pass through Kellas Dining Hall every day. We asked Pam four questions about her time at Emma.

#1 — What brought you to Emma Willard School?

I was looking for a part time job, so I applied on a Sunday, and started on a Tuesday! I was a part time pantry person, and instantly fell in love with the girls here. I became full-time two-years later when we introduced the nightly stir fry station and started being open continuously.

#2 — What is a typical day-in-the-life at Emma like for you?

I come in and help with lunch at about 11:00 a.m., and I get to meet and chat with my students and the teachers and help out. I start getting ready to serve dinner: some days we have bubble tea or Italian sodas and I serve at that station. I also set up the stir fry stations [Emma Dining sets up a stir-fry area every night!] and get ready for dinner. At 7:00 p.m. I start to wind down dinner, close up and head home to get ready to do it all over again!

#3 — What is one thing about working in dining services at Emma that would surprise people?

One thing that would be a surprise is that I had never worked in food before! My job before this was in day-care, where I took care of kids. It was kind of like here, but little ones. This has really been my first food job, and I am so glad I joined the team here!

#4 — What is your favorite space, place or tradition on the Emma campus?

My favorite tradition is Revels, there is so much excitement and interaction among everyone, it is so unique!

My favorite spot may not be there any longer, but it is the old bowling alley and pool that is under the chapel. Mr. Bayer gave me a tour there and told me how this was an exercise option for the students, so interesting!
