When October beckons through the trees at Emma Willard School, there's a palpable shift in the atmosphere: Ms. Maher’s decorations begin to transform the historic halls starting late-September. This isn't just any Halloween celebration—this is Emmaween, a beloved tradition that brings together the entire Emma Willard community in a spectacular display of creativity, school spirit, and festive fun.

Hosted by the Student Diversity Leadership Group, this year the costume contest took place during Morning Reports so that day students and more employees can join in! With categories ranging from dynamic duos, DIY, groups, and more, the creativity and personality of the Emma community was on display in Klingensten concert hall: a pink lego Batman, the Alexander Come Back to Sleep Trend, inflatable balloon dog costumes, many adults dressed as their childhood dolls (dolls in tow), the love triangle from Twilight, a chipotle burrito, a construction worker and traffic cone, Vector, Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland, the Corpse Bride, an angel of death, and so, so much more!

As daylight fades Emmaween shifts into the next phase of celebrations: campus trick or treating has students visiting various locations to collect treats, and the senior haunted house. This year, the class of 2026 has claimed Hunter and Weaver as their domain of terror, constructing the science rooms into an eerie laboratory experience for those brave enough to venture through the halls.

For those who prefer tonight’s crisp October evening on the cozier side, inner campus offers a bonfire and s’mores, and other activities to creep it real as the veil thins.

What makes Emmaween special? It’s not just the costumes, decorations, the candy, or the extra-special spread from Emma Dining–it’s the way Emmaween reflects the jester-like spirit of Emma Willard School.

Keep an eye out for our social coverage from Emma students tonight, and more photos coming soon!
