Who would want to experience the ultimate Canadian cold in the height of winter? All of our French IV students were up for the challenge, layering with all the clothing they could find to explore Montréal, its language and its culture, for three days at the end of February. Using French as their primary mode of communication, the students met and collaborated with Québécois elementary students; a Québécois filmmaker and her main protagonist (a French-speaking Congolese asylum seeker who traveled the “route de la mort” from Brazil to Montréal with her young family); explored colonization issues for Canadian native peoples; met local Emma Willard School alumnae; ate local dishes and foods; and participated in the annual city-wide winter festival, La Nuit Blanche. It was an eventful, frigid adventure. “Ben l’fun!”
