History Project

Led by History Instructors John Riley, Isabell Shields, and Emily Snyder, ninth grade students in Classical Mediterranean History recently completed team projects to assess whether a geographic region on another planet would be a good location to reestablish human civilization.

They produced a map of what a new human settlement in that region might look like, along with a flag that symbolically represented the characteristics of their region. Teams then presented the benefits and limitations of their region to the class, and the class selected the region they thought would best support the development of civilization. The goals of this project were to: give students an opportunity to get to know one another and build classroom community, research and learn about the impact geography can have on the way human civilizations develop, develop collaboration skills, communication skills, and comfort with presenting ideas to the class, introduce students to the Maker Space and the librarians, and, of course, have fun! The projects were on display in Dietel Library.
