Associate Director of Equity and Inclusion Gemma Halfi and History Instructor Dr. Katharine Holt recently took the Environmental Justice class on a trip to Collard City Growers in Troy.
After a conversation about natural and cultural histories of land stewardship and ongoing environmental inequities in North Central Troy, the group toured the grounds and picked up trash, collected seeds, and raked leaves for the mulch piles. The group also visited Radix Ecological Sustainability Center. The visits are part of the class's current study of environmental injustice case studies in the Capital District and Hudson Valley. They are learning about organizations that are working to restore environmental justice and serve our communities, and have discussed topics such as PCB contamination of the Hudson River, the heat island effect in local urban environments, the dangers of crude oil transport in Albany, and the legacy of industrialization in Troy.
