Dance

In Emma Willard School's dance studio, students learn and rehearse in a variety of dance styles and perform in assemblies, the annual spring concert, on tour and in other special performance events.

Dance offerings include three levels of ballet and contemporary dance, multilevel jazz, core fundamentals, and an advanced level performing group. All levels have the opportunity to participate in master classes by professional guest artists, view live professional dance companies, and experience the accomplishment of performing. Advanced students can explore composition and choreography through independent study.

Our main dance studio is aesthetically beautiful, with a vaulted ceiling, twelve-foot windows on three sides, a wooden “sprung” floor, and audio/visual equipment providing the opportunity for students to critique their work as well as view historical and contemporary performances. The contemporary classes enjoy a live accompanist for many of their classes.

Dance Company

The Emma Willard School Dance Company is an advanced level performing group chosen and directed by Dance Instructor Barbara Magee. Girls chosen to participate in Dance Company are intermediate to advanced level technicians who are personally responsible and have shown a strong commitment to dance at Emma.

In Dance Company, girls learn original, professional-level choreography, perform in a variety of venues for diverse audiences, and broaden their knowledge base by participating in classes and viewing many different dance styles. Their final concert provides girls with a glimpse of the production requirements for a professional-level dance concert. Inspired by their experiences, Emma graduates appreciate the art of dance at many different levels, including as audience members, hobbyists, or professional dancers.
