Visual Arts

Lindsay Slaughter, Visual Arts Instructor

In our classes, we challenge students to integrate technical skill with conceptual approaches and to apply them to a relevant contemporary vision. We not only help them to create strong artwork but also a capacity for creative, intelligent problem solving.
Emma Willard School's visual arts studios offer the perfect setting for students to immerse themselves in the creative process. Introductory classes provide a strong foundation in a variety of media, while advanced classes stress self-expression and the development of personal themes. Many students assemble portfolios for college applications and the AP Exam in Studio Art. Our students' artwork consistently wins recognition in various regional and national competitions.

The spacious and light-filled Maguire art building hosts eight studio spaces equipped with the most up to date equipment and ample room for students to grow as artists. The Dietel Gallery offers professional artists the opportunity to exhibit their work as well as to interact with the students through class visits and residencies. Students also have the experience of showing their work in additional exhibit spaces on campus and outside of school. Various publications, including our literary/arts magazine Triangle highlight student artwork throughout the year.

Students learn to make decisions in situations where there are no standard answers and to critically evaluate the results. We hope that they will leave their art class, as with nearly any class here at Emma, having learned to respect the often very different ways others think, work, and express themselves.
