The Sage Society

The Sage Society

Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage became one of America’s great philanthropists in the early 20th century, and was among the first American women to use her wealth for the public good.

In 1910, Mrs. Sage, Troy Female Seminary Class of 1847, provided Principal Eliza Kellas with the funds for the first three buildings on Emma Willard’s Mount Ida campus, allowing the school to move out of the Troy’s industrial downtown to the current hilltop location. After Mrs. Sage’s death in 1918, Emma Willard School was the grateful recipient of a generous bequest.

The Sage Society honors individuals who have included Emma Willard School in their philanthropic plans. Gifts include, but are not limited to, bequest intentions, charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, gifts of life insurance and retirement plan assets. The school is immensely grateful to the members of The Sage Society for their vision and support.
